Sensory Teams

The local authorities have sensory impairment teams which provide support to any individual with a visual and/or hearing impairment to maximise their independence within the community.

These teams can provide equipment where appropriate, and have rehabilitation officers who provide advice and support, mobility training and cover areas like lighting and kitchen skills.

Services for people with a visual impairment

  • Registration as ‘sight impaired’ or ‘severely sight impaired’, if eligible.
  • Support, advice and practical assistance for people with a visual impairment to maximise independence.
  • Liaison with other agencies/organisations who provide a service to people with a visual impairment.

Services for people with a hearing impairment

  • Registration as ‘hard of hearing’ or ‘deaf’, if eligible.
  • Support, advice and practical assistance for people with a hearing impairment to maximise independence.
  • Liaison with other agencies/organisations who provide a service to people with a hearing impairment.

Services provided by the Sensory Impairment Teams are assessed for and provided as appropriate to any individual with a sensory impairment regardless of whether they are registered or not.

There is likely to be a waiting list for the service, but you can ask to be referred for an assessment.
